Inspiring Interiors | Sitting Room

The trend for inspiring interiors has gathered a huge pace over the last few years. With the growth of social media more and more people feel increasingly comfortable, and proud, to share corners of their home which before now would have been reserved for the select few. 

We are starting a new series on the journal delving into renovation projects,  room updates and inspiring interiors spaces starting with the sitting room.

We wanted to create a room that was a grown up, cosy, an inviting and warm space. A room to kick back and relax in, to read in, to day dream out of the window in. Our sitting room is situated in the old cottage end of the house, originally you would have walked into it from the front door. It had fake beams on the ceiling, 60s beige ceramic tiled floor, a gas fire with faux marble hearth and a dark varnished wood surround.
The walls were covered in a beige woodchip, we needed real vision. 

The floor was the first thing to go, the plan was to put down a new wooden parquet floor but as we took up the ceramic tiles we were very lucky to find the original flagstones concealed underneath. Elbow grease, a hammer and chisel, hours and hours and hours of time, a lot of dust and a diamond grinder polished them up beautifully. We ripped out the old gas fire and uncovered the original fireplace, to bring the room up to date and give it a focal point we added a contemporary wood burner. We pulled down the fake beams and steamed off the woodchip. As the plaster on the walls and ceiling was so old we re-plastered the whole space.

The room is north facing, with incredible views across to the Mendip Hills, I wanted to use a dark colour on the walls and the woodwork to enhance the cosiness and went for Farrow & Ball Hague Blue with a white ceiling. This deep rich blue black colour enhances the views from the windows and door. I love the way it works with golds and antiques brass which is what I have chosen for the lights and accessories.

As we wanted the fire place to be the focal point of the room, as they say a fire is nature’s television, we have cleverly concealed the television in a side board from a reclamation yard that comes out on an arm when being viewed and can be hidden away from the rest of the time. 

As the room is so dark adding greenery is a bit tricky and we did have some casualties while I found the best places for them. I have gone for leafy ever greens, palms and an aloe, that are relatively low maintenance and placed them in the lightest places.

We have a mix of Coco & Wolf cushions (that I will inevitably change as we use so many beautiful prints all the time) and more textured ones from Projektityyny. The room will keep evolving as I add more accessories and art to the walls.
