Celebrating the Season | Autumn
With the arrival of October it certainly feels as though autumn has truly settled in. Leaves have begun to fall from the trees, the landscape is a beautiful rich tapestry and the air feels cooler, but not yet wintry cold. Here in England, our seasons are well defined, and at Coco & Wolf we like to embrace the differing rhythms of the year. Here are some ways you too can celebrate the changing landscape of the season.
Celebrate The Season and Get Outside
Autumn is a beautiful time of year to get outside. Mornings are chilly, with spider's webs glistening with dew and before the clocks go back there is a stunning golden sunlight which can only be found in autumn.
This is one of my favourite months to wrap the children up warm in layers of knitwear and take them foraging and collecting; hedgerows are abundant, apples and pears are perfectly ripe for the picking and trawling through crunchy leaves while hunting for glossy conkers feels nostalgic and seasonal in equal measure.
October is also one of the best months to cast your mind to the sky. Make time to watch a sunrise and you will be rewarded with a slow end to dawn as the sun rises and the velvety night sky slips away. Clear nights bring with them bright stars as we begin to see winter constellations this month and the moon will put on quite the show on the 9th October when Hunter’s moon, long regarded as a significant event in traditional folklore, will be bright and orange-hued.
Make Seasonal Changes at Home
While being outdoors in Autumn is a delight, making seasonal changes around the house means coming home from outdoor adventures is just as glorious.
With such a generous autumnal landscape it is the perfect time to bring nature inside. Collect dried seed heads and display in vases and ceramic bottles. Make an autumn wreath with rose hips to hang on your front door and and display interesting gourds for a nod to Halloween later in the month.
October is also the time when we start to think about layers, both in our wardrobes and on our beds. Make room for knitted jumpers and boots by packing away summer favourites. Add blankets and quilts to the backs of sofas and the foot of beds in preparation for diminishing warmth. You may also want to switch cushions; replace linen with wool which works wonderfully alongside Liberty Tana Lawn or Silk.
Finally, candles. It doesn’t take much explaining, really, if you’re anything like us we think everything looks all the more beautiful by candlelight. Early mornings where the steam billowing from cups of tea meets the cool air? Up the sense of calm with a candle. Evenings with friends, gathered around plentiful cheeseboard. Better with candles. We dot them everywhere in complementary seasonal scents such as warming musk, amber, sandalwood and quince.
Eat Seasonally
We’ve spoken many times before about our love for eating seasonally; it is far more sustainable, nutritionally beneficial and kinder on the purse. This season of harvest naturally provides us with everything we need in preparation for the winter ahead - with nourishing comforting food in abundance. Fruits and vegetables which flourish during this time will also give our immune systems a natural boost.
If ever a month lends itself to soup-making it is October. Root vegetables are impossible to ignore, with leeks, potatoes, squash, celeriac, and parsnips all in season. Switch up your go to Sunday roast accompaniments and replace with seasonal produce such as roasted fennel, artichoke, kale and runner beans.
You might also like to start thinking ahead to homemade Christmas gifts. This month you could collect damsons or sloes for flavoured gin, crabapples to make jelly, and apples and pear for chutneys.
How will you be celebrating this beautiful golden sunlight season?
